a lot of research was shown that annointing is actually developed from some type of self protection. when observed in the wild, hedgis would attack and kill posionous frogs and go straight for their poison glands and then self-annoint with the poison. it wold seem that the theory is that if there is a strong smeel or odor then the camo themselves with it in order to not be so obvious as something that does not belong.
there is still a lot about hedgies that non one seems to know and is still being found out.
