| pneumonia Hi,
Well, I never thought that one of my Hedgies would get pneumonia but she did. I was lucky to have it caught in time. Its been 3 days since I discovered she had it. The vet put her on Baytril for 2 weeks. She is doing much better and she is on her way to getting well. I posted this because I think its important to do a daily check on your hedgies to make sure nothing seems to be wrong with them. My hedgie is producing some smelly poops and I was wondering if that is normal when its on Baytril? All the other time I have used Baytril there has been no smelly poops. I don't know if this is normal.

| baytril can ause smlly poops, in some hedgies, butmy basic thought is the infection itself working through her system. keep an eye on it for consistency. also, if it becomes black or bright red or even a bright green. secndary infections are always a worry with hedgies. once their system gets stressed. kind of a once it rains, it pours effect. if it continues after a couple of days, call the vet and ask for a fecal to be done. of course, you can always do that anyway, if you feel better safe than sorry. keep in mind that her poops may contain a lot more mucus during this time of illness and antibiotics.
let me do some searching on this and get back to you. you can pm me privately if you need moral support. i have a very sick hedgie right now and understand how it is.

| ok, i have done all my checking and spoken with other hedgie people, and we all agree that if the smell is pretty bad, then your hedgie very well may have coccidia and you need to call the vet. he may have checked her poops and we may be overreacting, but it is better safe than sorry. coccidia can be serious. it usually causes diarrhea, but not always...so we have seen in some hedgies.
please let us know how this little one does!

| pneumonia Hi,
Thank you very much for the info Wee. The hedgie does have black poop. Today I noticed that it was not as smelly as it has been. I guess the infection is working its way out of the body. She is getting better....less liquid coming from her nose, her breathing is much better and she is more alert.....she is still eating a good amount of food(wet food, chicken, and kibble). She is a rescue and I have not had her for long but I think she will pull through. Thanks again for all your help. I will keep you updated on her progress.

| Pinky is getting better Hi !!!!
I was told that black poop and the smell is a very good sign. It means the the infection is running through her body. I was also told to give her as much of her favorite food as she will comsume. She has been eating high quality moist food and chicken...and a bit of kibble...she still running on her wheel like a bat out of hell..lol....many thanks to the rescue lady for her patients and time answering my many questions :P ....... Pinky says thanks !!!
