Wanting to ship our newcomer

Hello all! After reading your posts, I can tell you are quite the group that loves your critters. I have never been one for gps myself, and only could think of pink eyes and high squeals from strange childhood memories. then I got to meet my nieces' little guys, and saw how incredible, even trainable they are. and they cuddle! They aren't overgrown hamsters after all!

Anyhow, the girls grew, and so did their love and education with cavies. They got a pair for their birthdays, and have four adorable little ones running around. Our girls have been very good with them whenever we were with their other two, and they were incredible with these two when we visited. Basicall, I am in love with the little critters. They have incredible parents, and I would love nothing better than to start us off with a baby from my niece's first litter.

Herin lies our first difficulty. I live in Dallas, TX. They live near Portland, OR. My sister knows that they are shipped literally all over the world from three weeks of age and up. What is don't know is what the cost is, and what kind of procedures would be most beneficial. Has anyone had experience shipping little cavies? (Probably will be one month when we ship.) We possibly have someone flying down from Portland, but I am reluctant to have her take it in the plane, mostly because of the squeaking. (She is not an animal person.)

Thanks much for your enthusiasm for your babies. It is contagious.
TIA!
tonya

jennawing will become famous soon enough
I really can't help with the transport issue- though I would guess piggies wold be like dogs and have to be crated and stuck in the cargo hold. I hope you plan to get two, though- piggies need companionship!

Welcome to the boards

Your best bet would be to call the ailine you plan on using, they will tell you everything you need to know, cage requirements, cost, etc etc

Some airlines makes you have a health certificate from your vet, some insist you have a food and water sourse in the carrier for them, ,,some arent as picky,

Good Luck

I shipped my gliders from Vancouver to Halifax with ease. My breeder is very particular about which airline she uses. They did go in the cargo hold but they're always put where there's heat and it was a day flight so they probably slept most of the time. She had them in a fleece pouch with some veges and fruit for nourishment. Maybe you could look into an overnight flight where they'd sleep most of it? Also, talk to the guys loading up the plane and explain that they're little furries and need heat so they can place them in a warm spot. The shipping cage was about $20Cdn and the flight was only about $75Cdn (?) I can't quite remember now, not too expensive anyway. But that's also clear across Canada too (I'm not at all good with geography) your flight might not cost as much??

Honestly, I am trying to not overwhelm my husband.

*However*... would it really be a hugely big difference to have two over one? We homeschool, and will likely have the little gal hanging around in laps, snuggled while we read, etc. while we are doing school most of the time. I just want to be absolutely sure it isn't quite as big a deal as adding the second cat. (That second litterbox adds a unique odor, and the banging sound of them chasing each other is quite alarming at 2 AM. But I knew that was going to happen.) I just don't want to have 'too much too soon'.

If I am shipping in an approved cage, can they be considered regular checked luggage? (If I ship them with my sis in law.)
