I researched a lot of hairless species, including skinny pigs, when we got a hairless Syrian a few years ago (as there was no information on hairless hamsters at the time). There is a lot of good information out there on these special pigs. Generally, though, and sadly, hairless mutations in most species go hand in hand with metabolic disorders, compromised immune systems and a truncated life expectancy- about half of the haired variety of the same species. You also have to worry about skin abrasions, heat lamps, and special diets. That said, I loved our little Gillette, and though I would never have another hairless animal unless it was a rescue opportunity, she was very special and I am glad I knew her. I am sure skinny pig owners feel the same way about their little mutants.
