Should I seperate the male?

This is Ninya. I need to know should I seperate my male? He is acting like she is in heat again and just won't stop bothering her. I put the Igloo back in the cage, so she can get away from him, and now they each have a house. He isn't mean or anything, just annoying. Thanks

jennawing will become famous soon enough
Are you intending to breed them? Otherwise, I don't know why you would keep them together. There is no way you can watch them all the time to prevent them from breeding. You can always have him neutered and then they could live together peacefully.

I am going to get him neutered. But for now Ninya is very close to giving birth. I guess, I should have had my question read, Do sows need to be seperated when giving birth? I didn't think it would be horrible if they did breed. Thanks

The sow will be rebred by the male as soon as she's given birth. It is unhealthy for a sow to be rebred so soon, so you need to seperate the male NOW, before she gives birth.

Thanks.

I did seperate them, and will not put them back together til I get him fixed. At least she is more relaxed and comfortable before she has her babies.

The vet will probably tell you this anyway, but when you have him neutered, keep him seperated for another 2 weeks at least, since he will still be "loaded" to make babies for a while, even with his testicles missing...:P

Well, Ninya had her babies Friday night/morning, she had a total of 5 but one was still born. We have a runt that she had abandond, so we took them all to the vet to get checked out and and all are in good shape except of course "ity bity", my Daughter named it, we have to hand feed. The vet told me to feed everytime Ninya feeds the other 3, So low and behold I didn't get any sleep last night and don't really plan to tonight either. But it is all in the name of motherhood, LOL. Plus a ton of determination to keep ity bity alive, she (?) has become the family favorite.Ity bity
Ity bity being spoiled, and sleeping with hubby
Just too cute

Congrats! Guinea pigs are very easy to handfeed, since they hit the ground running. You can start offering softened guinea pig pellets at any time, she'll probably start eating them right away.

I once had a pig born here that was, for lack of a better word, retarded. She had no suck reflex, and hopped like a rabbit. I left her in with the mother and another nursing sow and hoped for the best. I kept a dish of water soaked pellets in the cage at all time, and the little baby thrived!
