Looking for timothy hay/pellets in the Annapolis Valley area

Hello,
My name's Adele, I just joined pets on the net. I'm trying to find timothy hay and pellets for my 2 guinea pigs. I've been buying it from a local pet store, but after one of my gp's got pneumonia last month, I've been trying to find better stuff for them. Also, the petstore's always out of hay AND pellets. I had to buy pellets they packaged, that's when my pigger got sick, so I've been wondering if it had something to do with it. I live close to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, but would travel to New Minas or Halifax to buy better hay.

Thanks, Adele

Welcome, Adele.

I believe that Christina (theratlady) was going to be bringing Oxbow in. She might know where to get it. Otherwise, there are other NS members that have guinea pigs and chinchillas that will be able to help.

hey there
i live in new minas, i get my hay from a local farm its got some timothy in it but mostly its orchard grasses.
well i dont work at the clinic anymore so i dont know if they would keep up with the oxbow without me there. its very very expensive too although good food.
right now im feeding martins mature rabbit food to all the pigs but my pregnant girl. its exactly the same as the guinea pig food as far as nutrients but has 1/2 the vit c added so its 250 mg/kg instead of 500mg/kg of guinea pig food. it has one percent less protein and 1-2 % less fat too. but the main reason i switched is because it has timothy as main ingrediant!!!! i wrote the company to find out about the vit c before i switched them over.

nice to meet you

Hi Christina,

I'm feeding my 2 guys Martins GP food, but I thought something with timothy might be better. I'll check the Martins rabbit food. Do you have to buy a lot of hay at once? Are there any organic farms where I could buy hay? BTW, I saw your guinea pig, the lemon colored one. She's beautiful!

I just reciently found a source of Timothy. I was getting peeved about having to buy the little bags from the pet supply store - it gets expensive. I drove out to Cole Harbor(just outside Dartmouth N.S.) to Walkers Feed Store right on the Cole Harbor Rd. They carry timothy. $5 for a big bale!
I was a happy camper when I discovered this. I had traipsed all over Truro feed stores one day reciently looking for it, to no avail. I figured it would be easy to find up there in the midst of farm territory. I was wrong.
My 5 piggies now have an unlimited and cheap source of yummy hay.
I unfortunately haven't found a source for timothy based pellets. Christina has been using the Martins rabbit pellets for overweight bunnies. Somewhere I read that rabbbit pellets shouldn't be fed to guinea pigs because they don't have enough folic acid and vit. c. The vitamin C problem is easy to fix with lots of fresh vegies. I don't really know enough about the folic acid thing though. If its not a problem then that would be a good source of timothy pellets.

bunnicula will become famous soon enough
I don't know about out your way, but there is a Global Pet Foods in Dartmouth that carries Mazuri Guinea Pig pellets. There's a Global Pet Foods in Halifax as well and they might be able get it in.

Oh wait, Mazuri is alfalfa based as well...
