Picky Eater

I have an extremely picky chinchilla when it comes to food. I have tried a couple different types of food and each one, he won't eat the pellets. He picks out the good stuff and leaves the pellets behind. I tried just leaving the pellets in his bowl but he just didn't eat then. I've also tried 2 different types of pellets. Does anyone know how to get him to not be so picky or know a way to try to get him to eat the pellets so that he gets the nutrients he needs?

Thanks
Ally

bunnicula will become famous soon enough
My suggestion would be to stop feeding him brands of food that have treats mixed in to the food. He may resist for a while (in hopes that he will get more treats), but he will eventually eat the new food once he realises that he will not get anything else (except for timothy hay, which should always be available). If you can, try to find high quality pellets such as: Kline Diet, Mazuri, Tradition, Oxbow, or American Pet Diner.

NOTE: When changing a chinchilla's diet, you must always do so gradually. Start by mixing a little bit of the new food in with his old food. Each day, start adding more new food and less old food until he is given only the new food (this should take 1-2 weeks).

If he doesn't eat the pellets anyways, how will changing the food gradually do any good? He won't eat them. It would pretty much be the same thing as changing it all of a sudden wouldn't it?

Thanks for the warm welcome

Basically, you are going to be weaning him off of the treats. Chins are quite sensitive when it comes to digestion and sudden changes can cause problems.

Okay. Thanks so much for the advice. What advice do you have when it comes to getting another chin for a companion? Is it better to have 2 males, a male and a female (if the male is fixed) or what? He is almost a year old so, I'd need to get one that is about his age. But I've heard so many different things and it's very confusing.

I would not recommend fixing your chin. It is quite a delicate procedure. Two males can get along quite well after proper introduction.
