| I know I hear this often but... It still absolutely INFURIATES ME!
I was telling a coworker today about Smudge, our little boarder who is here once more, and how awesome he was. She asked if I let him play with my two females and was all surprised when I said no because they could mate. Her next line was the pisser offer: "But couldn't you have babies and sell them to make a lot of money? You could make a business out of it!" I proceeded to explain that there is more to breeding than just putting two animals together, that there could be birth complications to plan for, that I don't have time to take care of kits if the mum can't etc. All I got was a dumb stare

| Sophie, I am right there with you! People want to know why I stopped breeding b/c I must have been making SOOO much money doing it. When I try to explain how emotionally draining the whole process was for me and I never made any money from it, I get dumb stares too. Also the minute I mention I own chinchillas, the next question is always, "do you raise them for fur?" Now when I tell someone new about my chinnies, I state they are part of my family and not for fur to avoid that question. |

| I'm sorry Sophie, that was pretty insesitive of her. I get e-mails like that all of the time from people with dumb ideas, I get pretty angry too.

| I can relate.. not only with my chinchillas b/c not that many people except for my co-workers & family know I have them so they know better.
I get stupid comments like that in regard to my Yorkie though.. "You should breed her, you could make a fortune off her".. plus I get asked at least once a week if I'll sell her. A couple of times I was asked by mothers (in front of their kids) and I replied.. "Hmmm, your daughter is kind of cute, can I buy her?" Then I roll my eyes and walk away.. some people are idiots. They treat animals like objects instead of part of the family.. Koko is MY kid.

| Same lady was listening to a coworker talk about her cat who is have a bout of dermatitis. When she heard all of the "trouble" they are going through to get the cat better, she asked why our coworker just didn't get rid of a cat and get a healthy one.
What an idiot

| Or she could just take her dermatitis cat to the animal shelter and lie to them & say she 'found it'..
I'd be rich if I got a dollar for every time we're lied to..

| We get that a lot when we take the ratties out-they want to know when we'll have puppies. When we tell them Pagan is spayed, they look at us like we're stupid. Someday we will get a female to breed Hogan to, but no time soon- and ONLY if we find a female to compliment him- it just irritates me that people automatically assume that people buy two of something in order to make more (and make money). |
