Housebreaking Chins

Cub is housebroken- I mean, she poos everywhere, but she will always find newspaper to pee on, no matter what, if she can't make it to her cage. Thing is, I don't know how she learned this. Is it normal chin behaviour, or does this normally need to be taught?

I had heard before we got chins that they usually don't pee outside their cage (pooing is a different story since I heard it is unconscious). however, our chins pee in their play area and it was suggested to us that they probably feel that its just an extension of their cage (since they spend everynight in there) and they don't realize they are not supposed to pee in there (its carpeted but we put an older carpet on top of the good carpet so the good stuff isn't ruined). I don't know if its normal or not now b/c all of ours pee in outside their cage. Sounds like cub is a good girl and knows her manners

Mine have never urinated outside their cages. I have a litterbox in Pablo's cage as she pees in the exact same spot every time. Like all chins, they still poop anywhere they want to... it's so easy to clean up after playtime when its just hard poops to sweep up.

Tinsel used to pee outside of the cage but only in one place...the mat in our bathroom I think it felt like the equivalent of charmin for us
