Hay cubes

For those of you that give your chinchillas hay cubes, do your chins actually eat them or do they gnaw on them leaving a pile of hay behind. I have noticed my chins barely eat their cubes but rather leave a huge mess behind (contrary to the belief that cubes are less messy). I like the variety between loose hay and cubes but find it wasteful that they don't eat the cubes.

Welcome to my world. I all but gave up on the cubes - they just seemed to gnaw on them and leave just as much of a mess!

Mine LOVE the cubes they seem to devore them, of course occasionally I find some hay in the bottom of there cage but not alot.

Now with the loose hay I think they figured hay fights were better than eatting it and I was buying oxbow hay and having it shipped to me EXPENSIVE for them to just TOSS lol.

Mine go in phases. Sometimes they eat a ton, sometimes they play with them.

I think they like the loose hay better. But I give them hay cubes for two reasons, one their less messy and when I fed loose hay there was always a huge mess and two, I have no room to store a bale of hay. But I am going to switch them over to loose hay once I move because I'll then have the room to store it and then the chins will be in their own room and they can make as much of a mess that they want, because they won't me in my livingroom
