| Getting Chinnie Castrated... I was just wondering how many of you have done it, how successful it's been, how much it cost... etc etc etc. Because after I read that article in the guinea pig section, I don't know why, but I just decided that breeding wasn't gonna work out. It just doesn't seem right anymore... So I was thinking, should I get Zeus castrated? Because him and Zoe get along really well and I don't want to split them up... would it be a good idea to get another male to hang out with Zeus instead, and get Zoe a girlfriend? Because I really don't want to.
Thanks in advance,
Shayna

| By the way, when I put 'It didn't work,' I meant, like, the hcinnie got hurt or died during the operation.

| I want to commend you on your decision. I have no experience with chinnie sterilization so lets see what the others think... but if its a risky surgery I'd personally get a friend for each of them. I love seeing all of the kit pictures that are posted on here but for me, I wouldn't even consider breeding them. I couldn't do it financially for one... and how bad would that look if I was breeding animals at home, then going to work for a shelter trying to find homes for abandoned, stray or simply unwanted animals
Anyway, good decision Shayna!

| Neutering a chin is a risky procedure. If you decide to neuter your boy be certain you have a very good experienced vet.

| Shayna it would be better to get them each a same sex buddy in my opinion, much safer too. Good on you for making this decision now.

| Here's a useful article that will let you know potential complications, etc: http://www.chinnitude.com/neuter.htm
An experienced vet is really the best bet if you plan to neuter him. Good luck in your decision! |

| OK, well, after reading those things, I don't think that getting Zeus neutered is such a good idea. I'll continue to read (and ask) around, but it doesn't seem too likely. So, I'll ask this... how likely is it that they will be fine living with other chins? Zoe's just over a year, about a year and two and a half months, and Zeus is about four, and they've both been living in pairs their entire lives. So I DO NOT want them to be by themselves... Should I get a younger male and younger female? Or some that are about the same age as Zeus and Zoe?
Plus, I got their new cage split completely in half, so I have two cages now that are both two feet long, two feet deep and three feet high... that's enough room for two chinnies, right?
And, if I do decide to get new cage mates, can I still let Zoe and Zeus play together when they go out??
Lol, sorry for all the questions, I just don't wanna do anything wrong...
Thanks fo rall of the help guys!

| The cage size sounds fine. I would go with younger chins to introduce them to, the younger the better. I would not let them play together as "accidents" do not take very long to happen. Is there a chance Zoe is pregnant? If so, I would wait to intro her to another chin till after pregnancy & seperation from the kits. And if she has a daughter, you can leave them together! |

| Ya, there is a chance... they've been living together since early May... but i dunno if it's likely or not... do you know what would be great? If she has one girl and one boy, lol. Anywayz, thanks for the reply Lixx. Should I seperate them ASAP, or should I waity until I know if she's pregnant?
