| Creating a trio I've got a TOV eb VC male, a violet female, and a white mosaic female that I am thinking about putting into a trio. Are these good pairings? What are proper ways to introduce them? And how old should chins be before being bred?

| The pairings will only be as good as the breeders who bred the chins. If you don't feel that the kits will be too heavily mutated, I think that sounds like a really good trio. There are lots of possibilities for colors given that the male is TOV eb VC.
There are many ways to introduce chins...a lot depends on the chins' temperments. I would try placing their cages close together for now and see how that goes. Then, try giving them playtime together once the girls are old enough and you are ready for breeding (in case he mates one of them).
As for age, that too depends on several factors. First the females should be at least 550 grams, preferably 600 plus. Secondly, their pelvic opening should as large as an adult thumb. Some breeders start "qualified" females at 9 months...some wait until a year. |

| I placed their cages about 2 inches apart, and they seem so curious. I know where these chins came from, but I've never bred before, so if it sounds like they will be too heavily mutated-just tell me and I won't do it. Also I'm breeding for pets, and not for selling them. I'm really anxious to try breeding, and I've got some awesome chins, I'm just nervous.

| Do you have pedigrees for the chins? What do their backgrounds look like? |

| I have pedigrees for them all.
The males parents were TOV eb wm vc & violet. The grandparents were TOV PW eb vc & solid violet, and a standard vc and a violet. The 2 sets of great grandparents are TOV tan & white violet (? white violet?), and solid violet & TOV eb vc. I don't understand all of that lol, maybe you will.
The violet female has violet and TOV violet parents, her grandparents are violet & TOV violet, and beige violet & violet. Her great grandparents were 1. violet and violet, 2. TOV violet & TOV beige violet, 3. TOV beige violet & standard vc, and 4. standard vc & standard vc.
The mosaic female is out of a standard and a white mosaic.

| By heavily mutated, I mean that there is little to no standard in the background of these chins. Judging by the pedigrees...these are heavily mutated. You said that you were breeding for pets but IMHO, I still feel that you should strive to breed the best that you can. What are your goals for breeding? Are you planning to expand your herd? Again, just MHO, but I would pair them with some nice standards or black velvets to try and work standards into them. It's a tough call because if you are planning on just keeping three chins, you probably don't want to buy more just for the sake of improving the herd.
Maybe some breeders will have a better perspective on this. |

| I guess I won't worry about it then, I just wanted to keep the babies as pets. Oh well, I was a prospective breeder for an hour lol. Thanks for your help

| I would also suggest introducing standards to these...the standards in the lines are too many generations ago IMO I will be having a pair who the male's Mother is a BV and father a white mosaic but grandparents both have a standard. He will be bred to a light hetero eb whose mother is standard and father is an medium eb. Any kits out of these two would eventually be bred to a nice standard.

| I also agree on using standards if you wanted to breed them, but in your case, that would seem a waste to buy more chins, just to have more : p
On another note, how many chins do you want and can handle? If you're taking the time set up a trio I'd imagine you want several babies, and that you plan to breed them more than once. You don't want to get in over your head.
