My chinchilla is finally coming out from hiding and sniffing my finger and ive read that they may nibble it a little but my chin nibbles harder and harder until it really hurts. Ive tried saying no firmly when she bites and shell run away for a second come back sniff again and bite again. help!?
Be sure that you don't have the scent of anything that your chin might think is food on your fingers.
Saying, "no" like you would to a dog does not work with chinchillas. You can not train them this way...in fact, it will probably just scare your chinchilla and make her trust you even less.
It may be that your chinchilla is still not comfortable and just needs more time.
Ok ill try that and one more thing I know chinchillas love to run and play....I let her go in the bathroom and play....ive only had her for about a week and a 1/2....should i be letting her out i feel like im goin about this all wrong....
Onedose, if she is uncomfortable or scared when she is out, you may want to let her adjust some more before overwhelming her. Each chin is different...some settle in right away and some take longer. A stress-free way to transport a chin for playtime is in the dustbath (providing you have a bath house that you can cover the entrance to prevent escape). She may enjoy her runs but may not like being held. I have one chin in particular who gets stressed when I try to catch her so I just use the bath.
Chins "nibble" in order to taste and get to know what is there, in this case your hand. Yes, it hurts, lol, because they don't know their own strength and how sharp their teeth are. If you can grin and bear a couple of nibbles, she'll be familiar with you and should do it less/not at all.
