I would definately buy from a breeder, you can most likely get a chinchilla that you can get a general idea of the health of it, be able to see the parents in most cases, breeders will also be there for advice if you need it, the list goes on and on. here is a link to POTN list of breeders in Alberta, I just recently got a chin from Carleen, and she is awesome to deal with. I also know that Jacquie and Maureen have some wonderful chins in breeding as well:
