Question Why do cats pad up and down on your lap before sitting down?

I have always wondered why cats pad their paws on your lap....it can be quite painful...2000 perforations in the tops of your legs from their claws....

Why do they do it?

Try having a cat that does that to your boobs!!

I understand that it's either an ancient thing that they do to try to soften the ground they are to sleep on (I keep telling Molly that my boobs and/or belly aren't going to get any softer!), or a comfort thing - kittens will often knead on mom's belly while they are suckling to encourage the milk flow.

ooooh now that does sound painful MM.....brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.....

I think the padding up and down like that is what puts me off having a cat the most really....me no likey having 2000 perforations

I believe kneading is a comforting behaviour for them. Not all cats do it. Only one of my cats (Wiley) does this.. his brother Wilson has never done it.
It does encourage the owner to keep the cat's nails clipped short! The only time I discourage Wiley is in the early morning when he's kneading my belly & I have to pee!
