Oh she is adoreable, MM...absolutely gorgeous. Such a shame she has had a dodgy start in life, I hope that you can get the toilet problem sorted with her very soon

Hi Molly Ally asked me to come in and see if I can offer any help. Some things I've learned in my 25 years of cats You really should have one box per cat. I know it seems like a lot, but it is best.

Also, once a cat has peed on a spot, they will always go back to it. The only thing I've found that helped really stop them from smelling the scent is pine oil. Works great for hard surfaces but might be tough on the futon. Don't use ammonia as it smells like cat scent to the kitties. You can buy commercial deterrent sprays too, which would probably be better on the furniture.

Did Sadie come into the house after the other cats were already there? Do they all get along?

Sometimes cats will mark territory. And don't believe that fixed or female cats don't mark as I have had 2 females that did. It's different than urination, they back up and lift their tails and shake. You'd know if they are marking with that behavior.

Lastly, it may come to the only way you may be able to stop Sadie is to keep her confined to one room when you are not home and keep an eye on her when you are.

Hope it helps.

Mary

Hi Alphakitty - thanks for the input. Sadie and Alex came from the shelter at the same time - I already had Penny and Molly. Alex and Sadie play together all the time, and sometimes Sadie will play with Molly, but I have noticed from their play that Sadie does try to be very dominant with them. Penny did bully Sadie at first, but that has now almost completely stopped.

I don't have the space for 4 boxes. I was talking to my GF last night (she has two rescued greyhounds) and suggested trying puppy pee pads - if I can get Sadie to go on those, then maybe I can start moving them slowly to the area where the boxes are. Worth a shot I think.

If you know anyone who works in a (human) hospital.. ask them if they can get you some bedpads that they use. Our shelter gets them donated by area hospitals quite often & we use them in cages especially under injured dogs that can't walk to get outside to urinate. They are washable & one side is waterproof.

Oh good idea Sue, thanks.

I took Sadie to the vet last night for a check up and urinalysis and blood work - I realized that there was no point trying to re-train her unless I had ruled out possible medical problems (the previous testing had focussed on the bowels). She weighs 7.7Kg (17 pounds), her gums, lungs and heart are good and her temp. is normal. The vet did seem to think she has a small bladder, and that it is most likely behavioural issues. They are also recommended trying hypo-allergenic foods, and I'm looking at Medi-cal by Royal Canin. Does anyone have any experience with this food, or Royal Canin in general?

I just called to see how she was doing, and they told me that her bladder is small, and they can't get any urine - WTF?? Where does it all come from at home then? I know it's her, and not one of the others. She has been at the vet's for 20 hours now. Could it be possible that she's so scared that everything has clamped up?

Maybe she's so nervous she isn't drinking any water. No water in.. no urine out.

I went to see Sadie tonight and they told me that apparently around 3am they were trying to express urine, when she didn't take kindly to the tech that was holding her front end and bit her, and escaped!! It took three of them to corner her, then she peed all over the floor!! When I walked into the visiting room she was at the back of her cage, and looked so depressed, poor thing. It took me about 15 minutes to get her relaxed, and she ate some soft food and drank some water. I got her to the point that I could give her belly rubs, and I was pressing pretty hard, but no pee. They are going to take it by putting some kind of needle in (can't remember the name of the procedure) which will probably be better since there will be less chance of outside bacteria getting in. They did get the blood taken for testing. I'm going to pick her up tomorrow morning at 9.20 and I'm told I have to talk to a tech when I pick her up.

The procedure is called cystocentesis. It won't hurt her. I've seen it done many times.
Keep us updated MM..
