I don't want my kitty declawed!!

He doesn't scratch hard.. he just kind of kneads my head. When his nails are clipped it kind of feels good.

Kody does that to,,and at 4 in the morning I dont find it amusing at all and he usually goes to sleep the rest of the night in the bathroom,,,

hes also got a bad habit of when you walk in the door he climbs right up your leg and into your arms,,,I thought it was cute until one day i was wearing shorts,,and yah well it wasnt so cute after that

Kody was on top of the ferret cage the other night,,Craig was sitting at the computer desk which is right beside the cage..well Kody jumped down,,,Craig had no shirt on and Kody was literally hanging off of Craigs back by his claws,,,Craig screamed,,HES GETTING DECLAWED

I was bad and laughed cause I knwo he wasnt serious but it can be a pain in the butt at times

Good luck Michelle....Im afraid I am not much for giving advice either becuase I am not as against declawing as most people are here....

I'm a little confused...does he have to get the deformed claws removed? I am against declawing when the purpose is to deter the cat from scratching. Cats scratch...you should be prepared for that as an owner. Now, if the cat needs them removed for a health reason, that can be different (still painful though!). I have recently started using Soft Paws and they are amazing!

I used to trim Max's claws but I thought I would try the Soft Paws and they are much better...and last longer.

My Grandfather had his cats front claws removed. The cat lived a great life never had any problems and could use his back claws if needed, as my dad found out the hard way when my grandfather died, the cat attacked him and ended up running out the front door, the cat was at least 10 years old and didnt have a problem with walking or that. IF he's going to get him declawed I feel its better off than dumping him in an overpopulated shelter.

It sounds like you're already clipping his nails. Why does your man not want to continue just clipping his nails? I clip Isobel and Bruce's and it's no problem (well, Bruce doesn't mind it. Isobel carries on like I'm trying to pull her nails out slowly with pliers), doesn't take long and it takes quite awhile for them to grow back. What if you offered to do the clipping for him? Bruce sometimes still kneads me in the head while I'm sleeping too and it does feel nice when his nails are clipped

Maybe if you show him some internet links that talk about the drawbacks of declawing he'll think twice? One thing that really changed my mind on the whole 'to declaw or not to declaw' issue was being told about a lady's declawed cat who developed arthritis in later life because of the surgery.

I hope you find a way to dis-suad him. It's a horrible thing to put a cat through, and completely unnecessary. It's pure mutilation.

It is amazing how many people still think it is perfectly fine to declaw a cat (Michelle this is not aimed at you). I was talking to my coworker a couple of days ago and he has 2 cats which are not declawed. One of the guys that works in our department (and I real idiot I might add) told my coworker he better be prepared for the cats to "totally destroy" their furniture and get the cats declawed. Unfortunately, I wasn't working with them at the time when this idiot said that but if I was I would have said, "Michael you better be prepared for your kids to totally destroy your house by writing on walls and furniture so you should have your kid's hands amputated". To me, it is the same thing.
