My cats do not go outside so they do not have collars. That being said, I have tried to use collars on Max when he was little and it ended in disaster. One time I found him hanging from the TV stand and another time, I went to grab his collar before he ran into the laundry room and it broke away (like it is supposed to). I guess you need a break-away collar for cats but at the same time, it seems to defeat the purpose if they did get out. I am planning on having the cats microchipped though.

The only time BB wears her collar is when she is out on the leash with us (only rare days in spring and summer). She is microchipped. She hated the collar at first, but we kept putting it on and she is used to it now.

Fertmom, I take it that the collar isn't a break-away then? All of the collars that I found were break-away...even the harnesses I bought. I can only take the cats into the backyard with the harnesses, just in case they bolt and it snaps off.

You're right, it wasn't a break away. I think we bought it at Animal Adventures pet store and have seen them at Pet World too. It is a teal collar with puffy painted fish on it and matching leash with puffy painted fish. She takes her walk in fashion LOL.

Interesting. I think I will look for some new harnesses...maybe online somewhere. I would love to venture out of the backyard with the cats but I'm too afraid of them snapping out of their harnesses.

Hank is an indoor cat but after 2 escapes I got her a fluorescent breakaway collar w/ tags. After I can afford microchipping, I may still keep it one her, I like the jingle she makes when she walks.

About 70 - 80% of the lost cat reports we get at work are for indoor-only cats. All my cats wear collar and ID tags, and all are chipped. My cats wear the break-away collars.
