broken tail?

For about a week now I have noticed that my 9 year old female cats tail is hanging straight down. It is not wagging nor has it lifted up at all. I patted her to try and get it to move and its not doing anything. It feels warm still but just is hanging limp. She is a indoor cat and I dont think she has done anything to hurt herself. She is walking fine and seems fine in every other aspect.
Any replies to this problem would be very appriciated.

I think I would have had her to the vet 6 days ago.....I personally have never heard of this "just happening" and it would concern me very much. Cats use their tail for balance among other things so I would get it checked out.

Hi green ladybug. Welcome to the forum.

You definitely need to get your cat to a vet ASAP. It sounds like the tail is broken or dislocated. Even though your cat seems fine now, the condition may cause other problems with the bladder and the anal sphincters.

I agree with the above. Anytime something is "out of norm" a vet visit should be schedualed. It could be an indicator of a much more serious problem.

I hope everything turns out to be ok....we had a cat when I was growing up that got his tail broken (by a neighborhood dog)....they amputated his tail and he lived to be over 19 years old!

prissypets is on a distinguished road
yep

I would also take the cat to the vet. I don't blame you for waiting a day or so either though because you want to make sure its something if you can't afford the vet bills.

This reminds me of this really strange cat tail story. My cousin and his 2 and 3 year olds moved into a new house. And there was a cat there. A few days later he noticed the skin and hair of the cats tail were laying on the poarch. Which was werid because it was a wild cat. And the next time he saw it the bone was missing and it was just amputated all by its self. It was a very strange thing. The cat is still around and it has been at least a 2 years now. It was very disturbing to see and hear about this.

But don't wait too long! Or this may happen or worse.

The longer you wait, the more chance of permanent and increased nerve damage. She may start to lose control of her urination and defecation and also of her hind-end completely.
