What sore can this be?

I am babysitting a friends GSD, havn't seen them for months, when i last saw them this sore was dime size and the vet said it looked like a fungal so cream was given, no such luck in healing it as the dog keeps licking it and a bandage creates too much moisture, now i see it has gotten much bigger and they are off for the holiday season. I am doing research for them as our vets in this small town suck!! Can anyone suggest a site i can read on and give to her so when she comes back i can advise her strongly to see another vet but this time armed with information. Otherwise i will not be talking to her as this is a ridculous thing to of gotten this far. I also have to clip the dogs nails, i don't associate with ppl like this and she already spent 500$ on her queensland that was put down in a matter of moments and she thinks more money will be put into this dog only to have the same thing happen. But none the less it needs to be looked into and the more i can do for her the better off it may be. I lost my dog here turkey day and spent 300$ and 2wks later he passed. So there is no guarentee what will happen and it's a shame to stand by and watch. If she doesn't go to the vet i will disown her as a friend as it sickens me. She also doesn't live in the cleanest of environments either. So any help is appreciated. Sorry fuzzy but you get the idea and the bronze color is iodine i applied to it. Im thinking cancer of some sort.

It looks to me like a Lick Granuloma.. it starts as a little cut and the dog keeps licking at it obsessively so it can't heal.. The dog needs medicated cream and a E-collar so he can't reach the wound..
Here's a link that tells about it.. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/lick.html
Mind you I'm no Vet but I've seen many of these so that's the first thing that popped into my head. The owner needs to get it checked & treated.

Sue - I was just about to reply that the first thing needed would be a head cone...And I would probably put on the anti-fungal medication and wrap it for a while so it had a chance to get started....also, I am not a vet, but that is what my common sense is telling me.

Also, if you are willing to disown the friend because of this, please don't disown the dog!

The link I posted makes it seem like it's impossible to get rid of the problem but I know it can be cured if the owner is persistant. It doesn't look by your picture to be too bad yet... If the dog starts licking you have to distract him by giving him something else to chew on.. get him a stuffed Kong or a good rawhide bone..
