| Recommended Vacuums for Pet Hair On the topic of pet hair, can anyone recommend a vacuum or vacuum type that works really well on pet hair (in carpet, on furniture and on bare floors)? Is there anything special that you should look for or that you should avoid?

| A Dyson is the way to go (we don't have one yet but we are aspiring to own one! ). We have a vacuum with an adjustable beater bar so that we can make the height exactly as high as the carpets. That way, it really gets into the carpet. |

| I agree with Candice,
We have a Dyson LOVE IT!!!!!. It is shocking the amount of pet hair it sucks up.
Little word of advice. Do not get sucked into the advertising and think you need to have the "Animal" ( the purple Dyson). We have the yellow one and do just fine. The biggest difference between the two is not the amount of power ( they all have the same) it is the attachments. So save your extra 100.00$ for the purple Dyson. We bought the yellow one and bought the extra attachment from the Animal. I think the extra attachment was 50$. It works great!

| I almost bought a Dyson a few weeks ago, but then decided against buying it after reading some reviews that claimed that they are really not that much better than other vacuums.

| Well, after researching vacuums for about a month now, I went out and bought a vacuum that I had just heard about two days ago: the Bissell Healthy Home Bagless Upright.
Here's a description of it: Quote:
The Bissell Healthy Home Vacuum is built like no other vacuum. Bissell has taken a fresh approach to cleaning with this upright. It offers superior cleaning for all floor types, the air, and even the vacuum itself. The Healthy Home features multi-cyclonic technology that delivers nonstop suction to remove dirt and allergens from all surfaces. For hard surfaces, the brush head can be shut off with fingertip controls. The AireTight HEPA filtration system leaves you with fresh, pure indoor air as it traps and seals in 100 percent of dust mites, pollen, ragweed, and mold spores and 99.9 percent of pet dander. An antimicrobial coating lines the inside of the easy-empty, bottom-release dirt container. Microban fights the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. Other features include a TurboBrush for pet hair, an anti-clog hose, anti-tip design, a 12 amp motor, a 15-inch-wide cleaning path, and seven height adjustments. Also included are Acarosan anti-dust mite powder and spray.
Standard Features
• 12 amps of cleaning power
• 15-inch-wide cleaning path
• Fingertip power and brush controls
• Cleans all home surfaces
• Easy-empty bottom-release dirt container
• 7 height adjustments
• On-board TurboBrush and tools
• 35-foot power cord
• Headlight
• Lifetime belt
Special Features
Microban Antimicrobial Protection: Inside of the dust container resides an invisible layer of protection from odor-causing microbes. Microban fights the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew, giving you an additional level of cleanliness.
AireTight HEPA Filtration: The HEPA filtration system traps and seals in 100 percent of dust mites, pollen, ragweed, and mold spores and 99.9 percent of pet dander to purify the air while you vacuum.
Acarosan Dust Mite Killer: Controlling dust mite repopulation is the key to reducing dust mite waste allergens. The Acarosan powder kills 95 percent of the dust mite population. The spray is most effective on upholstery, mattresses, and pillows. Acarosan is a water-based formula with no added fragrance.

So far, after using it just once, I am pretty impressed (and disgusted). It got a ton of dirt, dust and hair out of the carpet - even though I had vacuumed with my old, cheap vacuum on the the same day. Also, the features and accessories are all conveniently placed and easy to use. I especially like that it has a power brush accessory and a really long hose that is always ready to use and never needs to be assembled before use (on my old vacuum, you had to unscrew the main hose and screw in the accessory hose before using).
The only "problems" that I saw were that: a.) the power brush falls off when it is not in use (it is stored on-board the vacuum and isn't attached very well) b.) the canister takes a few shakes to empty and can be a little messy c.) the rubberized wheels stick to my baseboards if I get to close to them d.) the vacuum is heavy and while I had no problem using it, my shoulders are a little stiff today.

| We have a Eureka that sounds very similar to that. It has the same problems too. |

| The problems really don't concern me, as they do not affect the vacuum's performance, but I suppose that they could bother some people.

| We've had two Bissels. Just bought our second one a few weeks ago.
The first one was great, but the brush (part that spins) only lasted two years and then one of the ends melted so it wouldn't spin anymore. The first time this happened, we just spent $20 to replace the brush part and problem solved. The second time it happened we figured it was time for a new vacuum as we didn't want to keep putting money into one that would repeatedly break. It was just a flaw with that particular part as the rest of the vacuum works fine, but since we only spent $80 on the vacuum, we didn't figure it was worth it to replace that part again.
The new vacuum has more power and does a better job. It's set up a little better than the old one. We're happy with it. It doesn't have a handle on the back like our old one so it's a little more awkward to carry up the stairs, but other than that it is more ergonomically designed. |
