Ready for a new puppy? Read these 8 questions(DOGFANCY APRIL 2005)
#1: ARE MY EXPECTATIONS TOO HIGH?
Dogs shed, get diarrhea, dribble water, and vomit. You need to anticipate the mess. This is a moving, living animal that is going to excrete things.
#2: DO I UNDERSTAND THE FINANCIAL COMMITMENT?
Even healthy dogs need wellness exams, parasite control, vaccines, heartworm medications, and preventive care, which can run in the thousands.
#3: DO I HAVE THE TIME?
With bladder control averaging one hour for every month of age, an 8 week old puppy will need a potty walk at LEAST every 2 hours.
If you work full time, you will need to have a friend, or hire a dog walker to come by at least twice a day for feeding, pottying, and play time. When you are home be ready to have a doggy shadow. with a tether to your belt, you will need to spend significant time supervising the new arrival.
#4: HAVE I RESEARCHED THE BREED? cAn you handle the dog's adult size?Is the breed headstrong? How is the dog with children?
#5: DO I KNOW THE LAW? be familiar with your town law, ordinances, if you can fence or not..etc.
#6.DO I HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM? do you have other pet lovers to turn to(of course, on this forum, that point is moot-we are a HUGE support system! lol)
#7 IS THERE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE AHEAD? wedding? children? divorce? moving? If so be sure how the dog will fit in.
#8: WHY AM I GETTING A DOG TO BEGIN WITH?
sometimes people get a pup for all the wrong reasons. among them: to have a cute accessory, distract a child from the turmoil of a divorce, or to teach an irresponsible child responsibility.
Simply, the right reason is: You have the time, resources, and stability to share your life with a dog.
