Eyewitness News 4 has obtained a disturbing videotape of dogs being abused in Crownpoint. The home video shows two boys kicking the animals and hitting them with sticks and ropes.

A neighbor saw the incident and grabbed his camera. Now, the evidence is in the hands of the police.

“I can hear dogs screaming and crying,” said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified in fear of retaliation.

The abuse lasts for about three minutes. At the end, the boys back off and both dogs run away with the boys in chase.

The man says the boys have beaten the dogs at least four or five other times that he knows of. This time, he caught the abuse on tape. The neighbor says he is concerned about the dogs and the boys.

“The way it is now they could kill anybody’s dogs,” he said.

Eyewitness News 4 took the videotape to Crownpoint police.

“It’s definitely cruelty to animals,” said Officer Darrell Betonie. “It appears what they’re doing is training the pit bull to be aggressive… What they’re doing is wrong.”

Police say they will take action against the boys, but that’s not what the neighbor who shot the video wants.

“Somebody take the dogs to a better place and get these kids some help,” he said.

Officer Betonie says he would pursue the case starting Tuesday, but the neighbor says police had paid the boys a visit Monday night.

That's so horrible! I was reading elsewhere today about how a lady who shot a cat (not hers) in the owner's home got fined like $1000, sentenced to 100 hrs of community service and counselling is mandatory, but that's it!

Cruelty to animals should be taken much more seriously. I believe that we are meant to be stewards of animals, meaning, it's our job to take care of them. Just as parents are supposed to take care of their children. Thus, animal cruelty should be punishable in the same way as human cruelty.

It should be treated as though it were a human they were attacking. No ifs ands or buts. Simple as that.
