pit bulls tend to be misidentified all too often..how do the authorities know its pit bulls that are causing all these maulings and deaths?

Also, why aren't the owners being held responsible for their stupidity?

Banning breeds is one of the stupidest things that has happened in this world...:P One point for the dumb team as I like to say LOL

Quite easy to identify them when they have to be shot while they are mauling someone because nobody can get them to release. The head is always sent away to make sure they don't have rabies. I've met very responsible owners that owned a pitt , they would never have thought "their" dog would ever hurt a fly....fact is, a human is dead or maimed.I don't like to get involved in pitts, there's too much controversy. But I do place a human life above any dog. I don't point a finger at people owning them, I just don't feel comfy with that breed and wouldn't want the responsibility of owning one.

I place human life above any animal, that said I think some owners need to get their priorities straight, and if they choose such a breed they better get training for the dog and themsleves.
We can not let any animal become a danger to society.
Like the elephants or tigers with the circus that act out, & who can blame them, we need to take better care.
It's our responsibility to keep the animals safe and under control.
If that is shown to be impossible than the animal will have to be destroyed.

I disagree with this statement. MANY biting incidents could have been prevented by the human being proactive. Either by the owner having the dog under control or having proper supervision when children (especially) are around the dog. This goes for any breed.

Candycane..I agree..

I've read some of ronco's posts, and I'm fully convinced that he's just breedist..he has mentioned times a many that he doesn't trust pit bulls, that it is the dog's fault and not the owners, and according to his posts, he seems to support BSL.

I don't feel comfortable around ronco...:P

Could you hold off with the accusations please. I am not breedist in any way. All I said was that we did have a lot of maulings by pitts. Yes, they are banned in our province, but I certainly didn't make that law. As for being afraid of them, yes I am, but other people are afraid of rotties, doberman's. shepherds, etc. There is no shame to admitting being afraid of a certain breed. Some people are afraid of all dogs.

I think that this is an important debate. Let's continue to be respectful please.

Ronco, do you feel that these maulings are always the dog's fault?

Well, I've seen some really well trained and trustworthy pitts turn on a child it knew all its life for no reason other than the child knocked at the door to ask his playmate to come and play. But as I said before, I prefer not to get involved in the pitt issues because of so much controversy. I don't feel I know enough to really give any input
