Question New Puppy Help

I just obtained a beautiful now 10-week-old female pit bull puppy...I have two questions about her, however...

First off, I'm trying to get insurance for her from Petco, but they don't have pit bull as an option for a breed. What is her real breed then???!!!

Also, how old does a puppy have to be to be spayed? I would like to let her outside on her own (with a tie-up) in the backyard, but am afraid of the male dog next door who gets out of the yard (and through the invisible fence around his yard)...i can't afford anymore puppies...and i don't want her getting pregnant because i don't really believe in abortions - especially for animals, for they have no choice in the matter...besides, trying to sell those puppies that she has if she does get pregnant, now that will be hard...

if i could get some feedback as soon as possible i would be so happy...

Congrats on your new puppy. Perhaps Petco does not offer insurance for pit bulls? It wouldn't surprise me given all of the recent breed specific legislation. I would check with Petco or try another insurance company.

Many vets are practicing early sterilization. This can occur between 8-12 weeks. This is becoming a common practice amongst animal shelters throughout North America and there does not seem to be any side effects. In fact, the pups seem to recover more quickly when sterilized early. I would look into the vets in your area and see if there are any reputable vets who practice early sterilization.
