Housetraining puppies

I thought I would share some information on house training a puppy.
I came across an article in my new dogfancy and thought it might benefit those of you who may be considering a new puppy.

EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR
Supervise your dog closely, and take her out to potty frequently, on leash, so she never has a chance to make a mistake.
with an 8 week old puppy, this means every hour on the hour throughout the day. when she is outside and about to squat use a "potty phrase."
After she does, say yes, and give her a treat. let her play a bit before bringing her inside. some pups don't empty completely right away. letting her play a bit ensures the bladder is empty.
Once back inside allow 10-15 minutes supersived freedom, then leash her to your waist, tie near you, or place in a puppy pen until her next break time. In addition to hourly breaks, take her outside whenever she wakes from a nap, finishes playing, eats, or looks restless activities that make the need to eliminate evident. As she gets older and can hold it better gradually extend the time between breaks-do it slowly though.

nighttime is a different story. A crate is a valuable training aid! reinforces potty habits.
Close your puppy in her crate in your bedroom at night; she will be happier where she can see and smell you, and you will be able to hear her when she wakes in the middle of the night and needs to releive herself. you MUST take her out! If you make her soil her crate you will weaken the clean den instinct necessary for housetraining. After you take her out put her right back to bed....HER bed! resist the impulse to cuddle, or she may start waking you up just for hugs.
When an accident does happen DO NOT PUNISH the dog! if you catch her in the act, interrupt with a cheerful "NO" "Outside" put her out and then clean up the accident.
