akita info needed. :)

hola! well, since jen never planned on getting an akita mix, we are a little behind on knowing breed traits.

if anyone could provide us with personality, as well as, physical traits (for example, possible future medical problems), we'd appreciate it!

we know some, but we need to know a lot more. anything will be welcome (as long as it's true - haha!).

anyone ever had an akita or know someone that does? your info would be greatly appreciated!

gracias!!!

Don't know if you've looked at that yet, but it's a good start

Hi this is Jennifer and I am the one freaking out about the akita! I love him already and do not want to give him up. I am just scared that when he gets older he will be unruly and not listen to me. Right now I am just feeling really overwhelmed.

Hi Jen! Welcome!
I would highly suggest getting enrolled in a puppy class... and then go on to a basic obedience class. The description in the link above pretty much describes most of the Akitas I've come across. They are good with 'their people' but reserved with strangers and not so friendly with other animals.. Of couse, there are always exceptions.. I would just get the puppy well socialized and 'out there' while young to avoid problems in the future...
You're puppy is adorable btw!

I am a proud Akita owner. I can probably write a thick book on Akitas but here a few facts, pro's and con's about Akita ownership

FACT
- Hellen Keller was the first American to own an Akita
- Akita has been declared a national treasure in Japan

Pro's
- very intelligent, extremely loyal
- well developed guarding and protective instinct
- Akitas are not aggressive towards people
- bred for centuries to be house companions
- very clean
- Akitas do not bark unless there is a good reason
- Low energy
- You must be willing to be the leader of the pack!
- Akitas are very family oriented and are not happy when kept apart from the family

Con's
- very complex temperament
- can exhibit aggressive tendencies towards same sex dogs

If this is your first dog I will recommend another breed.
If you are looking for a bright, sensitive, responsive dog with whom you will be able to spend time, will be able to train and will be protective and loyal and devoted to you and your family for the rest of his life, then perhaps you will enjoy owning an Akita.

Ask yourself if you have the TIME needed to devote to socializing, training, and loving your Akita, unlike other breeds.
The Akita is an extremely intelligent, large, energetic, and strongly territorial dog whose life is oriented toward his owners. If he is the right dog for you, he is one of the most rewarding breeds to own, but this is also a demanding breed, and should not be casually added to the household on a whim.

Thanks for the info, but this is a really old thread (from July 2005).

Jen has had Ki-Adi (akita/shepard mix) for quite some time now.

I know! I will be posting some soon! I've just been slowly dying from school.

I am planning on posting some Penny/Chaquita/Ki-Adi/Josie (her first dog) pics soon! I promise!
