| Hi again Ally,
First, you have to research the fish you want to breed. Are the present water conditions you have available suitable for that specific fish(PH, hardness..ect)? If not, what type of chemicals must you use to create these conditions? Environement!!! Do you have the correct habitat? I can use my favorite fish called the discus to show you what parameters they require.
Discus need the following conditions to breed:
- a low ph (acid) around 6.0, you can use an acid buffer or peat moss to drop the PH
- a varied diet (including live or frozen insects...blood worms are prefered)
- temp of 82F -86F
- good water conditons
- low hardness
- a upside down clay pot or a piece of slate to lay their eggs on
- 20-33 gal aquarium.....too big of an aquarium and the fry will get lost
These fish are called the Kings of the Aquarium because they are beautiful but are very hard to breed. You can fake a rainy season or add slightly cool water to induce spawing. Also, buy a good aquarium with proper lighting. Don't skimp on the heater since its very important.... you don't want to wake up to a fish fry...lol The filter in the breeding tank should be low tech....I use a sponge filter. I hope this has helped you understand what it takes to breed discus.
Keeper and breeder of discus since 1990
