Ferrets need to eat throughout the day because their metabolism is so fast so they should always have food and water available. We feed high quality kitten food and high quality ferret food combination. She will also get boiled or baked turkey and chicken as "treats" to supplement her kibble. Ferrets imprint on their food and can actually starve themselves to death if given unfamiliar food so provide them with a variety of food choices when they are young. There is alot of good information about feeding a live diet of mice and chicken which sounds healthy, but I have not tried that route.

just want to expand on the term "high quality" since some of these foods could be fine for cats but really not great for ferrets. its really the foods with the highest abouts of animal based products in them. words and phrases such as chicken, turkey, chicken/turkey/fish meals (these are better since water is removed) eggs, chicken fat as opposed to "animal fat". i like seeing the first 6-7 out of 8 ingrediants being these. like annie said already that they need food at all times (well no more then a couple hours without)

things to avoid anything thats not meat, LOL but seriously they cannot digest much sugar(carbs) or plant proteins and such. they will however do their best to get at these things.
