|  Help with my Degus!
I just bought two degus from a pet store near my house. One of the degus jumped off the table and her bone went right thru her skin. After an obsevation of the other degu I bought, she also had a bone poking out of her leg, but hers was already completely healed and is the exact same break, same leg and everything. Is there some kind of bone disease degus can get??? Please help me because I am completely lost. Should I return them to the store?

| The weirdest thing about this is she gave no cries of pain, we didn't even notice anything was wrong till after we caught her. The wound also did not bleed at all. She doesn't even seem to notice anything is wrong with her leg. She started Bruxing after we picked her up. PLEASE help me! I am Freaking out!!!! | |

| GO TO A VET!! If the bone is poking out of her leg she needs to be seen by a professional veterinarian. The bone possibly may just be set or she may need surgury/amputation. I can not believe you have waited this long, GO NOW! | |

| Degu's have a very very high pain tolerence just because she didn't cry out doesn't mean it isn't hurting her, they handle pain and thats why sometimes you don't know somethings wrong till its too late with Degu's. Degu's aren't prone to any bone diseases as far as i know its just sheer bad luck and like any animal if they fall from a height their bones will break. You should take both degu's to a vet straight away as they both need seeing and sorting out, whatever you do please don't wait any longer as she needs seeing now! | |

| Ok, The degus will be fine. I brought them back to the pet store that i got them from. The lady who owned the store is bringing them to the vet to get thier legs reset. She said they would be fine and she will tell us how they are, and we can pick them back up after they are healed. Thank god.
She was very upset that she never noticed the first degu's broken leg, and as we were leaving, she checked over all the rest of the degus in her store.

| Why the heck didn't you take them straight to a vet, rather than taking them back to the petshop, which would've only prolonged their pain til they got to see a vet? When a pet is in your care and it needs immediate vet attention, it is your responsibility to do the right thing and not shift the responsibility onto someone else.

| I took them back to the pet store because i don't have the money to get them treated. Btw I did talk to an emergency vet and it would have been 7 hundred dollars per degu JUST TO BE SEEN! not to mention the costs of surgery, x rays, and other fees.
I'm sorry, I did the best I could for them, I am only 18, with a sucky job that brings in just enough to pay rent with 20 bucks a week to live off of.
Would you rather I had put them out of their misery???? | |

If you don't have money to afford even the most basic vet care (which is absolutely your responsibility) then you don't have enough for a pet. Did I understand you will be picking up the degus after they get better? What are you going to do next time they need medical attention? Just go back to the store or "put them out of their misery"?
I've had to use emergency vet care in several different cities (big ones and small ones) and have never heard of a $700 per patient exam fee. Maybe $100 or $150, but not $700. I'm sorry but I just don't buy that

| $700? I don't think so. The couple times I have gone to the emergency clinic with my chins, the cost didn't come close to that and the emergency clinic charges more. Using your age as an excuse not to provide adequate care for animals is not acceptable. I know you think we are being harsh but when you take an animal into your home, ANY animal, you have to make sure you are prepared for medical emergencies and money to provide health care. I couldn't imagine seeing an animal in such a state and not going to the vet.  | |
