Something Wrong...

I have a chinchilla that is about a year old. Just the other day, I found this huge bump on his chin. It was hard, it stuck out and was bald. I took him to the vet and they went to take a sample of it, but all that came out was blood and pus. She doesn't really know what it is, but gave me some antibiotics for him because when she looked into a slide of a sample of the bump and found some bacteria. But she is still very confused by it. Then later that night, I found two more balding spots underneath his arms. It looks like the start of what he has on his chin. The ones under his arms look like huge mosquito bites. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of or seen this problem in chinchillas and might know what is wrong or what to do. Any advice would be great.

Thanks,
Ally

My best advice would be to go to a vet. Best of luck!

i have never heard of this. My first thought was an infection from over grown roots. Chins roots of their teeth can grow through their jaw bones and can become infected but if under the arms as well i have no clue. does he have a mate that could have injured him?

When I took him to the vet, there were no scratches on him anywhere that would have indicated that my other chinchilla would have hurt him. My first vet said it was an infection and mostly went away in about a week.

Well... Here's the update from when this was first posted...

I later the next week had moved. Both chinchillas did fine the whole 12 hour drive (eating and drinking). The next day, Shadow had not been eating and wasn't very acting. In fact, he was falling asleep in my arms. This was a huge sign there was something wrong. I took him to a vet where I live now. She took x-rays of his body and teeth. Come to find out, there were problems with his teeth (They didn't line up correctly. But she said this was not due to overgrowth and because of this, he would have been on medicine for it for the rest of his life since there was no way to fix it), the medicine my previous vet had given him messed up his stomach and did more damage than it was worth, and his kidneys were failing (She didn't know if it was acute or a hereditary problem, either way, the cause was unknown, but stress was most likely made it worse). Well, he died over-night...

Thanks so much for the replies. It's much appreciated.

Aww I'm so sorry to hear about Shadow's death. That's horrible news.
