My best friend's husband has had his chinchilla for almost eight years now. The past few weeks he had been rather lethargic and almost stopped eating completely. He lost weight and wasn't anything like himself (he's normally very bouncy). He was concerned with what vet bills might be, as they just had their first child last month as well and there are no exotic vets close to us. While my friend and I were out buying a new microwave he passed. But not knowing much about chins, is eight years a good age or was he older than average or younger than average?
The average chinchilla life expectancy in captivity is 10-15 years but they can live 20+ years. In the wild, life expectancy is 8 years.
