Turtles from the "Wild"

When I was growing up, we'd occasionally run across a box turtle and I'd be allowed to play with it and "keep it as mine" for a few days. I'd feed it, give it water, watch it waddle around in the grass, etc, and then I'd let it go again. I never thought I was doing anything wrong and I did research about what they ate and such so it seemed like a great learning experience....but looking back, I probably never should've messed with them really. What do you think about other people who let their kids take in "wild" turtles as their own pets?

Not sure it would hurt anything

My son went through a phase where he would catch salamanders and try to keep them in an aquarium. After a few days, he would put them back by the pond. He loved dropping in grass and flies that he caught. I don't know as they actually ate the flies but it made him happy. The salamanders didn't seem to be any worse for wear. I wouldn't think it would hurt a turtle, either. I think this is a "boy' thing because my daughter never did this.
