Are you a breeder? I'm just a bit confused that mom hasn't been separated from her litter yet and she's pregnant again already?

The babies are only three weeks old- they are not mature until about 6 weeks or so. There is no rush in seperating them. Mom needs help usually with litters, so a second litter is always a risk. I assume you would seperate the dad out with the boys when the new litter is nigh- so mom will not get pregnant a third time. And not likely you will get new colours if you bred the same pair- their genetics will not change between litters. If you are interested, I can refer you to some sites where you can leran gerbil genetics- so you can plan goals and know what colors to start with in order to get the colors you want to end up with. I can also refer you to some breeder directories so you can find healthy breeding stock if you wish.

Those first two explain genetics pretty well and the last gives the genotypes and helps to identify colors. This next is a good forum with lots of breeders- and will help you learn a lot! Good luck!

I would definitely suggest a lot more research if you intend on continuing to breed. Hoping for "different colors" does not seem to be an appropriate attitude considering that you lost 3 of the 7 pups. I think that I would be hoping for healthy, quality pups.

I also question why you allowed a breedback when this was her first litter. Even when animals are from good lines, birth defects and complications (because of the physicality of the female) can occur. Was it a planned breedback?

Sorry to sound so negative but this situation makes it seem that you might be in over your head.

well we wouldn't have lost any babies if it weren't for the male gerbil that killed them...and as for hoping for diff colors..i went on a site recomended by a fellow pets on the net person and they said that she did the same thing and by the third litter she got the color she wanted. Also I had an intentional breedback,I want to keep Darling with Gizmo and not separate them...what do u suggest i do?I was prepared to breed...and i have homes for many babies that aren't even born yet...what do u think i should change

The father killed the babies? I'm assuming that you've removed him from the cage. If you haven't yet, please do so now. Also, it's not recommended to breed a male again once he has killed babies. I'm glad to hear that you've got homes lined up for the upcoming litter. Have you also found homes for the four survivors of your first litter that you listed here as available for adoption?

The Argete gold male should not be bred again if he has killed babies. It doesn't matter if he's just aggressive or not - if he's killed babies it would be unwise and unsafe to breed him.
