Long haired hamster sites?

Hey guys,
can anyone recommended a good site about long haired hamsters? I've never had hamsters before so I'm looking for sites that would have stuff about behavior, feeding, housing, etc. Also, right now our 2 guys are in the same cage, but the pet store people said they should have seperate cages....is that neccessary? They seem to get along just fine (right now they're curled up together sleeping) Thanks for any help!

Hi Nikki

I don't have any websites to suggest however I DO have some advice. I think the pet store was absolutley right. Hamsters (with the exception of dwarfs) need to be seperated as they get older. They are solitary animals who can often kill one another if left to live in pairs.

How old are the hammies you got? If they are still quite young, they probably have not become too territorial yet. But if you leave them like that it could potentially get ugly later on.

Hi Sophie

The boys aren't very old....about 2 months old. Do you think I should seperate them now, or wait until they're a little older? Right now they're in a Habitrail cage, and we were thinking of getting another one and connecting them with a tube....would that be ok? Or should the 2 cages not be attached like that? They are getting along great right now....how much longer do you think it will be before they get territorial? Thanks for the advice!

I would probably seperate them now. Seeing as they are still quite young, they will be easier to tame and socialize with you and your family. You are best to keep them in two totally seperate environments where they cannot run into each other. Don't worry about them feeling lonely as these types of hammies really are solitary animals and will adjust quite well.

I know suzoo knows about hammies as well. Maybe she can post some advice as well. I'm just speaking from the experience I've had in the past as well as the knowledge I've acquired reading books on hammies. They can be quite fun as a pet. I had one hammie who was so tame he would fall asleep in my arms if I scratched his head just right. he was such a cutie
