funky smell

My kid sister has a hamster and it saddens me to say that although she loves them she didn't understand that you need to clean the cage on a regular basis as well as the little critter. I taught her how to care for it since I also had a hamster when I was her age. However, that funky smell is still lingering in the area, any ideas on how to get rid of it without using air fresheners?
