Dwarf Hamsters

Well I seen these two dwarf hamsters at the pet store and was very tempted to buy them, but I didn't, but I still might. How do dwarfs compare to Syrian hamsters, as in temperment, taming, caring for? I have a nice little cage and everything already I got on sale a while back, just would like something to fill it up with. It's either a pair of dwarfs or another Syrian, but I think the dwarfs would be cool, as I have never had that breed of hamster before. What do you all think?

Most people will tell you- dwarves take longer to tame and will not stay tame if you don't handle them consistently. They are definitely faster and not into sitting in your hand much. They also ca become very cage territorial- and might not appreciate your hand in there. But there are always ways to work around this- I would recommend training them from the beginning to come out of the cage and into a tub or playpen adn work on taming them there and always use that as your interaction space.

I will point out though, any small animal- the more you work with it/them the tamer they are- so it really will depend on what your expectations and time limits are. I miss my little dwarf- I am tempted to get a little pair all the time- but know I don't really have the time right now to work with one.

And goes wihtout saying- be sure to get the same sex- they aree little and squirmy, so easy to missex!

I used to have a same-sex pair of Roborovski dwarf hamsters. They were very quick but I found they weren't aggressive at all or territorial of their cage.. but I agree with Jenna.. it really depends how much time you can devote to handling them. Very important.

Not sure still, I'm going out to the pet store in a little while, hoping they allow me to handle the hamsters before I make my final decision, if I don't feel comfortable with them, then I will probably get another syrian, preferably an orange coloured one, but it doesn't matter to me, whichever one looks most innocent.

Canadian Guinea Pig is an unknown quantity at this point
I went to a pet shop to hold a dwarf and the people wouldn't let me saying it's to dangerous for the hamster because people have a habit of droping those little guy. So I left because I want to be able to see the hamster hands on. I told him I'd be back but to see their syrian when they get them because I now decided to get a larger one to start off with.
Hope you have better luck. Let us know what you get and show pic's

I'm back, I decided on two dwarfs, girls, they are cute. One has red eyes, light brown fur, she's so calm and the other is all grey with black eyes. No names yet, can't decide. I want one name that is calm sounding and another that is kind of rowdy as they seem to be complete opposites. Any suggestions?
