Question How do you stop dog aggression

If your dog is aggressive to other animals or humans, what can you do to stop it?

i think you have to slowly train it when it was a pup...you bring it out for walks and parks everyday and let it get used to strangers being around first... and day by day you work your way from there...
or you can always bring him/her to training school?

I have rescued rottis and 1 came as a dog who was aggressive even to me if there was food around or I stepped near her when she was laying down.
It took a lot of patience, trust and work but it can be done pending if you are comfortable, know the potential threats of what could happen if the dog doesn't choose to learn with you or something goes wrong, and know it could take a while to fix.

Took me 5 years to work out the damage from an abusive ex owner with my last dog, a beautiful GSD. In the end I had no choice but to have him put down due to longterm physical and mental injuries. The only consolation is that from the age of 2 thru 7 he had a good life where he was loved and made a fuss of all the time.

Mine was tied to a tree at a drug dealers camp.

Aww GSD I have had 2 of (Kayla and Kilby) and I think they are quite sensitive in nature so things can be traumatizing for them especially because they can often go both ways (be shy or bold) I'm glad yours did have some year of good life and was so lucky to have had you.

Its a shame some things people do we cannot always change but we can certainly learn from them and share the knowledge... hopefully promoting awareness so people can help stop it someday...

One of our rotties was neglected in the way of never being interacted with and now is at my feet 24/7 and even wants to be with me when I go to the bathroom... poor soul is scared I will leave him I guess

I got my GSD when he was 2 years old, Jess, I was the 5th owner. He was a big boned dog too....terrified of everything and everyone. Taking him for walks was like a military exercise...body harness, headcollar, 4 normal collars, 6 leashes, 1 muzzle....and alot of patience with an extra person by his side (one person either side of him) and never took him out in the daytime when people were about at first cos he freaked out completely. Took 4 years to get him to walk on the headcollar and a single leash with reasonable confidence. Unfortunately he had been beaten with a stick across his hips, so he wasn't too steady on the rear end and that (along with seeing a previous owner and thus reverting to how he was day one) forced my hand and I decided that it would be too much to put him through retraining all over again.

AW I appreciate that decision was probably so hard but the most kindest and fair thing for him... such a shame how badly someone can... lets say "seriously mess up" a animal... I would use other words but Ill keep it clean of course... I should find pics of our past two shephards... I know they were both pre digital but I should have photos somewhere
Any of your boy? I like the males look myself but I had two females... one though had the bigger head...
You know... the shephard world is one that really upsets me with the people who have been destroying the breed when they try and breed a sloped back for shows... but yea I wont go off on your thread about that sorry.. just got to thinking about it...

Perhaps you could start a thread about breeding alterations into dogs and how it has gradually eroded some of the most famous and oldest breeds, Jess

I am sure it would be a hot topic

As for photos of my Sam, sadly I haven't got any of him as I have moved a couple of times since I had him and as with most things when moving home...they were lost along the way

I would happily string up by the spherical objects anyone who abuses a dog (or any animal)...it's like when you hear of the aggressive dogs attacking kids, well sometimes rotties and gsd's are used as status symbols...they are pets first and guards when properly trained, not abused til they fear everything and everyone.

OH I shall when I can... thats I good Idea because it makes me so upset... even Rotties... I mean the "american breed" has morphed them into mutants from the small original sheep/cattledog workers they once where... good idea... I shall start looking soon.
