Help! I have a German Shepherd that was abused and I need advice

I have a Male German Shepherd that just turned a year old in November. I adopted him from a family that abused and neglected him. He weighted 62 pounds when I brought him home and after four months he is up to 80 pounds which is a GREAT improvement.

When we first brought him home he wouldnt get out of the bath tub for two weeks. We finally got him out of the tub and then he wouldnt come out of the kitchen for a week. He has gained significant improvement he socializes somewhat well at the dog park he runs, chases, plays with other dogs. Not aggressive twards dogs, children or women. Men on the other hand he is very aggressive twards. He wont come out of him crate unless we call him over, and even then he is very nervous.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to help him be less nervous around people and other dogs, please reply to this or email me at a.kelly11@hotmail.com.

Thank you!

I know it is going to take a lot of time for the dog to fully recover, if at all. Animals don't forget what they've been through. Patience and lots of love will help. But other than that, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm not an expert. I hope everything works out!

Congratulations on rescuing a neglected pet. That's awesome!

I would say to try to have every man who comes into the house bring a treat or get a treat immediately when they come into the house that they then give to your dog. Eventually (it may take a long time) your pup will think "Hey these dudes are always giving me cookies! They can't be that bad!" At least I hope that's what he'll think.

First off... Thanks for rescuing but most of all thanks for takeing whats commonly considered a "Hard to place" pet.

We had a golden / chow mix that was basically raised for the first 6 months of his life in a crate in a basement. he was deathly afraid of men (probably his abuser was male) and really shy with new faces, men, women, kids.. other dogs.. he was even afraid of grass when we got him.. lol anyhow. Seeing that he is so timid with guys, be sure no one.. thats a huge no one, trys to force him to like them.. let him gradually get used to the guys.. have the guys totally ignore him but toss him a treat every now and then. It took Bailey a whole year to trust me and finally consider me a friend.. and never chased him around or tried to "Force" him to come to me.. or have my wife bring him or hold him for me.. I would walk in, say "Hi Bailey" toss him a treat and go about my business..slowly, he began to wait for me to come home, then after awhile he would follow me around at a distance, then lay or sit a few feet away and watch me.. eventually he started coming up and smelling me and after a bit he'd sit with me and let me pet him.. he then was my best friend.. lol So, dont force your dog.. he might even bite!
