Dog's Behavior Before Natural Calamity

This question is not only for dogs but for all animals as a whole.

There is a documentary that animals could sense natural disasters days or hours before it will happen. Scientists haven't discovered that kind of extra sensory that animals have, which we humans don't have.

Now my question is, what are the behaviors of our pets, specifically a dog, when they sense natural dangers?

In the case of my doggie, she didn't eat for 2 days and became really sick. On the third day, our place was shook by an earthquake with a measurement of 7 Richter scale. And another thing is that the dogs in the neighborhood howl before an aftershock happens.

We haven't experienced major disasters fortunately, but my lab is incredibly sensitive to any sort of upset. He gets really clingy at the first sign of someone getting a cold even, so for events like major storms coming through or tornado weather....he'll start acting weird a couple days before. He won't eat as much...he'll be jittery in his area of the yard, pacing around or not resting for more than a few minutes at a time. It's upsetting to see 'him' get upset.

I will get upset when I know that something wrong is coming. If only we could understand the gestures of these animals, we could also prepare ourselves for these calamities. I guess animals are closer to nature that they could anticipate the actions of nature.

We haven't experienced any real disasters here either. There have been a couple of minor earthquakes in recent history but they only shook the house-woke me up but neighbours slept through. The animals didn't show any behavioural changes.

When I was 18 and had my first "own place" I had a 1/2 doberman and 1/2 collie dog, she was the cutest. Anyways, we ended up getting tornado's that ripped through our state that summer and the dog just freaked out. You know when your pet is happy to see you after time away, like that - 100 fold. She would not sit still for afew days before it happens, when we we heard about it on the news we packed up and moved to a friends house for the time being (I lived in a top floor apartment, friend and his family and his pets with me and mine all lived in a basement for two days).

Lots of the behavior can be explained by atmospheric pressure changes I think. Dogs especially have sensitive hearing on average and the pressure could make them uncomfortable and uneasy. Neither of mine are particularly apt to have issues although my oldest hates thunder and lightening and will bark at it like he's trying to protect us.
