Ripped Fin!!!

I just noticed that my new betta has a ripped fin! I don't know what caused it or how I can help him. Here's what it looks like:

What do you guys think? Did he snag it? Is he sick? Stressed? What should I do? He's still not eating (it's been almost 5 days since we got him) but he's swimming around all of the time)...

That's quite the rip! Poor little guy. Perhaps you could ask at the store about putting some ick meds in the water. I think there's one for fin rot too. Other than that, I'm sorry I don't know what to suggest, sorry

Thanks. I'm asking around on a couple of fish boards. Two people responded so far and they both thing that he probably snagged it on something. I removed the biggest plant that he likes to swim through...

I still don't know what to do. Someone suggested maybe putting bettafix or aquarium salt in the water. Someone else said that it doesn't look to serious...

I feel so bad for my fishie! I'm so stressed out about it already...it looks like I am going to go out tomorrow morning (I need to go to work soon) and buy a smaller tank and some medicine for fin rot and start to treat him.

Don't freak. It might be fin rot or not, and if it is, fin rot is easy to treat. Its very common in pet store bettas, so don't worry or wonder what you did wrong. Another possibilty is he could be tearing at his own fins. I know that sounds weird, but some bettas get over excited with they see their reflections, and they tear at their fins as if it were another betta. My first betta, Frankie did this all the time, and my second betta, Libby, did it when he was young. Watch him and see if you can catch him in the act. There isn't much you can do, except try to prevent him from seeing his reflection. I really think that this could be a possibility since you have a hex tank and I'm sure he can see himself. If it is fin rot, just get some meds and start treating. I believe that fishies with fin rot usually have black around the edges.

His fins don't have black around the edges. They do have little red dots which might be blood...I don't think that he is tearing his own fins or at least I have never seen him do it (and I've read that it is not very common). I have also never seen him flare up in his tank (aside from when I have shown him a mirror).

A couple people have suggested that it is probably because of the water conditions because the tank hasn't fully cycled. Do you think that he'll be alright in that tank until tomorrow morning?

It looks like he just tore them Our Rocket here constantly has torn fins. Bettafix will fix him right up, aslong as he isn't constantly doing it like Rocket does. To me he looks fine otherwise in those photos. Have you tried different types of feed for him? Some fish like the granuales, some the flakes, some the pellets, some fresh/frozen. Mix it up a bit and see if you can entice him with something more preferable.

I agree with Lizz, especially if he has red around the fins. Like I said, two of my bettas did it, so I don't think its that uncommon. His fins look like they were torn by him to me, rather than from a disease.

I have never heard of a betta losing fins due to water conditions or an uncycled tank, I'm not sure what was meant by whoever told you that.

Danielle, if it makes you feel any better, most of the Bettas we have owned, had torn fins. Their fins are very delicate and the slightest thing will injure them. We put a bit of Stress Coat in the aquarium and the fins eventually heal.
