My fish

Hi all,
I finally got around to taking some pics of two of my cichlids. They are no the best pictures but considering what the others looked like, these ones are pretty good.

The first one is Jack. He is a Jack Dempsey. He's nearly 11 inches long now.

The second one is Blue (I know, original names!). He's a cobalt blue cichlid. In the picture, you can see three small spots on his tail...anyone know what they are? At first, we thought it was ick. But he's had them for a year now. They are irridescent like the rest of their scales...is it just a strange coloring?

Blue is only about 7 inches. We got them both when they were about an inch and a half long so we are very happy that they are growing so well.

Hi Candice,

Looks like you take great care of your giant fish.....lol :P I know i'm a discus freek and the only fish for me is discus...hehhe....but these guys are nice too. Its funny how we get to like a certain fish and stick with it. I've had many fish and even worked for a wholesaler so you could imagine what I used to bring home....actually not what, how many of each......hahha...I had about 20 tanks at one time and did I mention animals ...yup thats where I got my first 2 chins from... ..... Am I normal????

katescritters is an unknown quantity at this point
The spots are called Egg Spots. I believe they are there to encourage the male to watch for and pick up eggs that are being laid during mating (the male then carries them to the nest) This would then make Blue a girl.

Really?! Thanks Kate! I have done my research on cichlids in general but not the specific fish. I used to belong to a cichlid board but I found that they were quite rude if you didn't eat/breathe/live cichlids.

Red, I am very biased to cichlids now. I think they are great fish and there are so many varieties. We also have a sailfin pleco but he was being shy.

I want to get more but we need to upgrade our tank first. I do have a 15 gallon that is empty right now but I think it is too small.
