| Aquarium help needed! I just finally got round to cleaning both my tropical and goldfish aquariums.
I turned off the power to everything, cleaned and refilled, and turned the power back on. Everything works except for the filters, in both tanks! Is it possible that both the filters have broken at the same time, or have I forgotten to do something? Neither one of the filters makes any noise, not even trying.
I have put a temporary old filter in the tropical tank until tomorrow, when I can get new ones, but I thought I would ask the experts! |

| Liz,
Are they Hagen Aqua Clears mini 150,200,300 ???? hang on the back type...if so, you have to fill the filters with water first then plug them in...if they still have problems keep adding water to the filter till it starts to pump water... a lot of people have problems priming these types of filters...or if that still does not work, take the filter apart(all the plastic pieces)...and then pull out the impeller...clean out the impeller well and then the impleller..... if that fails, its the electrical cord that is shot....good luck and let me know if I can help you further....

| Hi Bite Me,
Are you still having filter problems Liz???? I need to know what type of filters you have in order to help. Yesterday, I had a 4 year old on my lap so I was in a hurry to type out some causes of filter problems. If you go to a fish store most of them will try and sell you a new one when in reallity all you had to do is clean out the impeller and the well. I've seen them do it many times at pet shops. If I worked there I would have cleaned the filter impeller in front of the customer and sent them on their merry way. I just try to be as honest as I can.

| Hi Red! I haven't done it yet - that's tonight's chore. I found some info on line - both the filters are Aquaclear, one's the mini, and the other the 50. Funnily enough, when I got out of the shower this morning, the mini decided to work again. I am still going to take them apart tongiht and see if I can fix them. |

| YES!!!!! Red, you are my favourite person today! (but don't tell the others, ok? )
They both work again! Thank you so much for your help. I was just about ready to spend $100 I don't have on two new filters. |

| Now, any good tips for getting algae off rocks before I have to go and replace all those too?
I really have to clean my tanks more often. I've put reminders in my outlook.
How often do you clean your tanks, Red? |

| Glad that you got them working again. I used to have the same problem with my old filter (I think that it was an Aqua Clear as well).

| Hi Liz,
You made my day yesterday!!! I felt happy to help a fellow aquarist. As for algae problem, cut down on the amount of light. Buy a pleco or otto to help with the algae removal. Go to the dollar store and buy a cheap scrub brush and scrub those rocks...hehhe. Water changes every week also help cut down on algae problems. Ok,now the tank cleaning question. I do water changes once a week in my 55 gal tank (a good 30%) because of the type of fish I have (discus). I clean my 2224 Eheim square canister filter every 2-3 months. I also prune my plants every other week or so. I don't have algae problems as such maybe the odd time I have it forming on the glass but I take care of it with an aquarium scrub pad. The biggest secret is WATER CHANGES!!!!! Do them every week or two and you'll have a happy and healthy aquarium....lol

I sound like a Polly Anna of aquariums....lol |

| Well I have the rocks outside on the balcony trying to dry them off. I'll bring them in at the weekend and give them another good scrubbing. Do you think I should boil them and let them cool before putting them back in the tanks?
I also need new plants - the live ones keep getting uprooted no matter how much I weigh them down. I'm thinking of getting plastic ones this time. My poor tanks look clean, but so empty right now! |
