Conures

We have been doing our research on birds and think we have decided to get a Conure.

Does anyone have one? Or have any info/sites they would like to share?

It seems awfully hard to find reliable information.

I use to have a peach fronted conure. Most conures are noisy birds, so I chose the peach fronted because they are very quiet. The only sounds Banshee made was imitating and talking. They are very smart and playful birds, and if you want a bird that is easy to teach to talk, this one is a good candidate

The conure research is going great!

We've met a whole slew of birds in Ottawa from the various pet stores.

We've handled a maroon-breasted conure (currently my first choice because they are the quietest of the group), a dusky headed conure, a green cheeked conure, a pearly headed conure, a quaker parakeet, and a some weird little bird who's diet is more or less pure sugar.

Conures have reputations for being LOUD birds - although the subspecies that the maroon-breasted and green cheeked are part of isn't that loud. Their colouration is mostly green with a hint of maroon for both of these - the green cheeked has the maroon on its tail. They are very energetic and quite intelligent - which also means that they are mischevious.

The quaker (which is currently Rincewind's favorite) is an even more mischevious birdie.

Each of these birds are known for their ability to speak - which isn't that much of a consideration for me but it is good to know. When people talk about giving the bird attention they often mean having the bird out and participating in flock activities - not necessarily receiving cuddles and absolute attention. This was a bit of a concern for me since many places say a bird of this type (or larger) say they should get 1-2 hours of attention in the morning and 3-4 in the evening.

The attention becomes 'easier' to give when it's a matter of the bird being out and in the same vicinity as yourself as opposed to necessarily being right there on you. Of course, one should handled their bird regularly and socialize it - but that should go without saying.

I'd have to say we've learnt a fair amount about birds - although I think there's still a huge amount to learn remaining.

You may want to take a look at Senegal Parrots, african brown head parrots, meyers parrots, and red bellied parrots. These are know as poicephalus Parrots, there are others in this group but I cannot remember all the names off hand. They are wonderful little companions they are around the size that you are looking for and are much quieter than the conures. If this is your first bird conures are good too but its the noise factor that makes people think twice but if that doesn't bother you then I say go for it. And yes there is so much information on birds that after 6 years of researching and owning, I still learn something new everyday!

Good luck on your search. If you have any questions from personal experience just ask away. I am owned by a Senegal Parrot, Parrotlet and a budgie.

i have a quacker parrot, or also known a a conure. he is a very loud parrot but a sweety. they learn to talk pretty fast, and hate to be left out of conversations. mines name is George. George has some how learned to get out o his cage so when guests come he'll fly out and perch on someones head. lol. conures are social birds, and need lots of attention. also i have heard never to feed one avocodo because it can kill them. does anyone know if this is true?
